South African Wine Legends
At the heart of the sale is a run of South Africa’s most historic producers. Kanonkop, the Simonsberg estate long dubbed the Cape’s “First Growth,” is represented by five vintages of its varietal Cabernet Sauvignon reaching back to 1982 – from the Beyers Truter era – and four vintages of its Bordeaux-style flagship blend, Paul Sauer.
Meerlust, in the Myburgh family for eight generations, contributes a thirteen-vintage run of Rubicon, its pioneering Bordeaux-style blend first made in 1980, spanning 1994 to 2017, alongside verticals of its varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Klein Constantia’s Vin de Constance – the estate’s celebrated revival of the eighteenth-century sweet wine once prized by Napoleon and the courts of Europe – appears in fifteen vintages from 1997 to 2018, offering a rare opportunity to trace one of the Cape’s most storied wines across two decades.
Rustenberg, on the Simonsberg foothills and in the Barlow family since 1941, is featured through its single-vineyard flagship Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux-style John X Merriman blend.
Thelema, a high-altitude Stellenbosch benchmark for Cape Cabernet since the 1980s, spans eight vintages of its varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from 1996 to 2018.
Small in Quantity, Big on Reputation
A handful of sought-after Cape producers appear in small parcels that regularly draw some of the highest scores in the local market.
- Mullineux Straw Wine – Neal Martin rated the 2011 at 97 points, calling it “one of the best straw wines ever produced in South Africa.” Made from air-dried Chenin Blanc in the Swartland, six lots span the 2008 to 2011 vintages.
- Anwilka – the Stellenbosch estate founded as a joint venture between Bordeaux’s Bruno Prats and Hubert de Boüard and Klein Constantia. The 2015 – a Shiraz-led blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot – was rated 93 points by Neal Martin.
- Cederberg – from South Africa’s highest-altitude wine estate, isolated in the Cederberg mountains. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon scored 92 points from Tim Atkin MW.
- Restless River – the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde estate’s Ava Marie Chardonnay 2017 (96 points, Tim Atkin MW – “one of the Cape’s best Chardonnays”) and its Main Rd & Dignity Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 (95 points, Tim Atkin MW).
- Reyneke – from South Africa’s leading biodynamic estate: the Red Reserve Syrah 2018 (97 points, Tim Atkin MW) and the Reserve White Sauvignon Blanc 2017 (96 points, Tim Atkin MW).
An Incredible Selection of Bordeaux
The International Session is a deep and classically assembled run of Bordeaux, drawn from more than thirty châteaux across the region’s leading appellations. Highlights include Château Latour’s 2004 Pauillac, Château Palmer’s widely acclaimed 2008 Margaux, and Château Ducru-Beaucaillou’s 2000 Saint-Julien, alongside both Pic-hon-longueville estates, Pauillac’s Lynch-Bages, Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Pontet-Canet, and Saint-Estèphe’s Cos d’Estournel, Canon-ségur and Montrose , alongside Graves’s Domaine de Chevalier and Château Pape Clément.
The Right Bank is represented by Pomerol’s L’Évangile, La Conseillante and Vieux Château Certan – whose 2012 was singled out by critics as one of the wines of the vintage – together with Château Figeac’s 2019 Saint-Émilion, from an estate promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” status in 2022. The collection closes with a fine run of botrytised sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac, including Château d’Yquem’s 2004, Château Climens, Château Coutet and Château de Fargues.
