Thornybush is proud to unveil the newly enhanced Saseka Tented Camp, where familiar spaces have been thoughtfully recreated to offer a more refined and immersive guest experience. In collaboration with Artichoke Interior Design and Black Sable Architects, the lodges public areas have been refreshed while remaining true to Saseka’s original identity and its magical setting within the surrounding bushveld. The existing structures have been preserved, with new elements naturally integrated. The refreshed Saseka introduces an intimate indoor dining space, a dedicated wellness and gym facility and an expanded Little Saseka, now offering two additional guest suites. Thornybush Unveils an Enhanced and Refined Saseka Tented Camp
“At Thornybush, we’ve always believed in evolving with purpose, enhancing the guest experience while holding onto what makes each lodge special. The aim of this lodge update was to respect the original elements of Saseka whilst elevating it to meet the expectations of the modern luxury traveller. We are delighted with the end result. Saseka now feels both familiar and refreshed” says Andy Payne, CEO of Thornybush

The architecture and design of Saseka draw inspiration from the surrounding bushveld, with organic forms, natural materials and an earthy palette at the core. Layers of wood, stone and rattan are complemented by tones of green, ochre and terracotta, creating spaces that feel grounded and calm.
“Our vision was to build on Saseka’s timeless aesthetic by introducing new layers of texture, warmth and depth,” says Caline Williams-Wynn of Artichoke Interior Design. “Drawing on the strong organic and textural qualities of the surrounding landscape, we incorporated natural materials such as wood, stone and bamboo throughout. We focused on how each space connects and flows, ensuring every element contributes to an atmosphere of understated, quiet luxury.”
Sustainability also played a role in the refurbishment. Wherever possible, existing materials, including the original decking, were repurposed and reimagined as cladding and finishing details, while existing structural footprints were retained wherever possible to minimise the impact on the environment.

One of the standout additions is the new indoor dining area, a cosy retreat for cooler evenings and rainy days. Soft lighting, layered textures and double-sided fireplaces create a warm, intimate atmosphere, complemented by bespoke timber lighting and handcrafted stained-glass details. Integrated into this space is a new indoor bar with timber detailing and seagrass inlays has created a sophisticated gathering point for pre and post dinner drinks. The addition of a wine room invites guests to explore a curated selection of South African wines, set within a richly textured space of green marble accents and terracotta clay tiles.
A new boma has also been introduced as an alternative dining experience. The space remains rooted in traditional essence, while incorporating subtle contemporary design touches.
Another exciting addition to the Saseka offering is the new wellness and gym area, offering a contemporary take on safari wellbeing. Rather than a traditional spa, it’s designed as a holistic sanctuary focused on movement and restoration, complete with a lap pool, cold plunge and infrared sauna
“The wellness space was conceived as a sanctuary for the soul. The absence of dedicated treatment rooms allows the focus to shift towards movement, recovery and mindful connection, creating a more contemporary wellness experience where guests can unwind and reconnect with themselves while remaining completely connected to the bush around them,” continues Samantha Muhlbauer of Artichoke Interior Design.

Little Saseka, the exclusive-use tented villa, has been expanded to offer even greater space, privacy and flexibility for families and small groups. With the addition of two new suites, the villa now accommodates larger groups while still maintaining its sense of intimacy and and exclusivity.
At its core, the refurbished Saseka Tented Camp is designed to be more than just a place to stay, it is a sensory safari experience. “Our intention was to create something that is not only beautiful, but deeply considered,” adds Williams-Wynn.
“A space where guests can slow down, reconnect and fully experience their surroundings.”
This latest chapter for Saseka reflects Thornybush’s ongoing commitment to offering unforgettable safari experiences that feel both authentic and quietly elevated – a place where the spirit of the bush remains at the centre of it all.
