Theme: Design Makes the Future
Decorex Cape Town is back this June with a groundbreaking programme of 16 unmissable talks, organized into four bold, forward-thinking themes that explore how design is shaping Africa’s tomorrow. Under the banner Design Makes the Future, this year’s Future Talks is your gateway to the ideas, talent, materials, and movements that are actively redefining how we live, work, create, and connect.
Four Themed Design Journeys:
1. Legacy and Future Voices
Celebrating past, present and next-gen brilliance, this track features:
- “Ten Years: Body of Work” sessions with design luminaries like Tracy Lee-Lynch (Clout/SA), Maira Koutsoudakis (Life Interiors), Reform Studio (Egypt), and SAOTA.
- The future-focused “Rising Stars” curated by VISI, spotlighting fresh African design voices shaking up the status quo.
2. Spaces and Systems
Dive into design’s role in shaping hospitality, retail and tourism:
- “The Hosts” and “The Shoppers” bring together hotel designers, ministers, and retail disruptors.
- “The Planners” unpacks storytelling in architecture.
- “Green Spaces” looks at sustainability with icons like Babylonstoren.
3. Materials and Making
Celebrating innovation, heritage, and craftsmanship:
- “The Machinists” explores future tooling and tech.
- “The Transformers” reveals bold new materials.
- “The Artisans” honors handmade excellence.
- “The Colourists” lets colour lead the way, featuring talents like Bonolo Helen Chepape and Olivié Keck.
4. Culture and Experience
Where design meets senses, spirit, and celebration:
- “The Curators” and “The Future of Gatherings” look at global inspiration and cultural festivals.
- “The Sensorites” offers a multi-sensory journey through scent and emotion.
- “The Flavourists” serves up the intersection of gastronomy and design.
A Future-Forward Experience
Alan Hayward, Executive Creative Director of Decorex Africa, says:

In a powerful hands-on activation, second-year interior design students from Greenside Design Centre will design the actual Future Talks theatres, bringing the spirit of mentorship and fresh creativity right into the heart of the experience.
