Long Lee Manor at Shamwari Private Game Reserve has been awarded a Michelin Key, the hospitality equivalent of a Michelin Star, placing it among the world’s elite hotels and destinations.
Long Lee Manor is now one of only 27 hotels and destinations in South Africa to receive this prestigious recognition, joining an exclusive list that includes the Mount Nelson, Cellars-Hohenort, The Cape Grace, The Saxon, and Le Quartier Francais.
The Michelin Key award evaluates properties based on architecture and interior design, quality of service, personality and character, value for money, and contribution to the local area.
“Receiving recognition from Michelin places a restaurant or hotel amongst the world’s elite and in very select company. It’s huge for us,” said Joe Cloete, CEO of Shamwari.
Long Lee Manor underwent extensive refurbishment in 2018/19, carefully preserving the architectural charm of the original manor house while enhancing its luxury and comfort. Situated with breathtaking views over the savanna and surrounding mountains, the manor offers an unforgettable guest experience.

Originally launched in 1900, the Michelin Guide began as a practical resource listing maps, mechanics, petrol stations, and hotels. Restaurant reviews were added in the 1920s, eventually making Michelin Stars the culinary equivalent of an Oscar. In 2024, the Michelin Key awards were introduced to honor outstanding hotels and destinations globally.
