The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event Celebrates Heritage, Innovation, and Achievement
The story of South African wine is one of dedication and passion—a story worth telling, sharing, and raising a glass to. The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event is an annual gathering that is a tribute to the visionaries, pioneers, and dedicated people who have shaped the industry. It also marks the birthday of South African wine, offering a moment of reflection, gratitude, and celebration for an industry that has stood the test of time.
With its blend of glamour and tradition, recognition and reverence, the event plays a vital role in shaping the future of South African wine. And the next chapter is already being written: The 2026 Wine Harvest Commemorative Event will take place on Thursday, 5 February 2026, once again hosted at Groot Constantia Wine Estate, South Africa’s oldest wine-producing farm. Industry nominations are now open, closing on 1 July 2025.
A Celebration of Commitment and Progress The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event shines a spotlight on those who have put in years—and even decades—of dedication to making the South African wine industry what it is today.
In 2025, the spotlight fell on a remarkable group of individuals:
- Johann Krige, recipient of the 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership, recognised for his lasting impact on the industry.
- Praisy Dlamini, whose work in the Growing Inclusivity category reflects the event’s commitment to diversity and transformation.
- Bennie Howard, a true champion of Wine Advancement, whose expertise and passion have left an indelible mark.
- Jan Booysen, whose contributions in Viti- and Viniculture continue to push the boundaries of South African winemaking.
- Marcus Lewis, the first-ever recipient of the Wine Agri-Worker—adjudicated by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture—acknowledging the indispensable role of farmworkers in shaping the industry’s future.
The recipients, who embody the innovative, inclusive, and tradition-rooted spirit of South African wine, earn their awards through a rigorous selection process ensuring only those with lasting influence are recognised at the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event—made possible by the generous support of Groot Constantia, Standard Bank, Air France-KLM, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, South Africa Wine, Wesgro, Die Burger, Cape Town Tourism, MCC Labels, and Seabourne Logistics.

Embracing the Future Wine tells a story—one that has been unfolding for centuries. The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event honours that history while ensuring the industry stays bold, innovative, and forward-looking.
“As the custodians of South Africa’s oldest wine-producing farm, we see firsthand how tradition and innovation go hand in hand,” says Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia. “The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event ensures that our legacy continues to inspire and evolve for generations to come. It’s a reminder of why we do what we do, and the impact it has beyond our vineyards.”
Blessing the Harvest: A Moment of Reflection For all its glitz and prestige, the event also holds a deeply humble core. Every year, the blessing of the new harvest serves as a poignant reminder that winemaking is as much about respecting the land as it is about mastering the craft.
“The blessing of the harvest serves as a humbling moment,” reflects Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture. “The South African wine industry embodies both excellence and resilience. This event is not only a tribute to our history but also a promise for the future, ensuring that our wine sector continues to flourish for generations to come.”
A Symbol of Resilience and Unity The South African wine industry has weathered economic shifts, climate change, and global market pressures, yet continues to stand strong, adaptable, and deeply connected. The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event serves as a gathering point, bringing together industry leaders, winemakers, and visionaries in a shared celebration of progress.

“The South African wine industry has always found ways to adapt and thrive,” says Clifford van der Venter, Chairperson of the Groot Constantia Trust. “What makes this industry special is that it’s built on collaboration. The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event is a reflection of the camaraderie and shared passion that keeps our wines world-class. When we come together, we celebrate our collective success—we strengthen the industry’s future.”
“We at Standard Bank take immense pride in supporting the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event as Platinum Partners,” remarks Brendan Jacobs, Head of Agribusiness South Africa at Standard Bank. “Our pledge is to champion sustainable evolution and innovation, enabling the South African wine industry to flourish on a global stage as well as being partners of growth as they start, manage and grow their businesses.”
The Industry’s Birthday as a Platform for Growth Since 2 February 1659, when Jan van Riebeeck recorded the first production of wine in the Cape, the industry has grown into a global powerhouse. Now, there’s a push to make this date a key moment for South African wine worldwide, securing its place on international shelves, menus, and wine lists.
Expanding the Celebration to the Global Stage “South African wine is celebrated far beyond our borders,” notes Wilson Tauro, Country Manager Southern Africa for Air France-KLM. “As a brand dedicated to connecting people and cultures, we see a tremendous opportunity to position this event within the global wine and tourism conversation—encouraging more international travellers to explore South Africa’s wine regions.”
