In a groundbreaking moment for Africa’s cultural landscape, the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival will make its African debut in March 2026 in the picturesque Franschhoek Wine Valley, marking the first time in the festival’s nearly 60-year history that it will be hosted on the continent.
Founded in 1967 in Switzerland and globally revered for its exceptional music line-ups and intimate concert experiences, the Montreux Jazz Festival has hosted legends such as Prince, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, and Stevie Wonder. The festival now brings its unique blend of world-class music, artistic excellence, and cultural exchange to the heart of the Cape Winelands.
“Hosting the Festival in Franschhoek offers a unique opportunity to bridge cultural divides and create meaningful connections between emerging South African artists and the world’s top international music leaders,” says Mark Goedvolk, Founder of MJF Franschhoek.
“This new collaboration marks a historic moment as the first-ever African edition of our festival. We are honoured to work alongside local partners who share our passion for live music, creativity and hospitality,” says Mathieu Jaton, CEO of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
The 2026 MJF Franschhoek will not only attract global audiences and music lovers but is also poised to become a major catalyst for tourism, job creation, and cultural investment across the region. Following a detailed site visit in January 2025, festival organizers selected Franschhoek for its natural beauty, world-class wine and hospitality offerings, and commitment to community engagement.

“This marks a monumental milestone not only for the valley but for the entire continent,” adds Ruth McCourt, CEO of Franschhoek Wine Valley. “We are thrilled to welcome the world to our doorstep through this iconic event.”
In line with the festival’s educational and social responsibility goals, a partnership with the Uncorked Music Academy at Franschhoek High School will foster music education and talent development among local youth. This reflects the ethos of the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation (MJAF)—a global nonprofit dedicated to nurturing emerging artists and musical exchange.
Franschhoek Tourism is now welcoming proposals from interested partners, sponsors, and media collaborators to join in making this milestone event a success.
