Strauss & Co’s March Timed Online Wine auction is themed around the 2014 Vintage. One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle. Just how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older?
Every year, Winemag.co.za releases its highly anticipated 10-Year-Old Wine Report, a definitive examination of how wines from the modern era perform with age. The Judging panel was chaired by Christian Eades (Editor of Winemag.co.za) and James Pietersen of Wine Cellar, Cape Town merchants and cellarers of fine wine and Francois Rautenbach.
For this year’s tasting of wines a decade on from vintage, 82 wines were tasted. According to producer body Vinpro the 2014 Vintage was seen as a ‘challenging season’ on account of high and untimely rainfall and the producers had to cope with difficult conditions.
‘The 2014’s recently tasted for the latest Winemag.co.za 10year review, proves unequivocally that our finest wines mature beautifully. I was particularly impressed with the top-rated Bordeaux Red blends. The Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon Whites are simply stunning, with years of evolution still ahead.’ – James Pietersen, CEO Wine Cellar.
Among the highlights of the auction are seven of the top ten WineMag rated wines, all tasted on Tuesday, 20th February 2024. These include:
