Burgundy and Champagne themed fine wine and art auction now online until 16 March
A recent development for Strauss & Co auctions has been their significant foray into online auctions and now, for the first time, Strauss & Co presents a combined art and fine wine online auction. Bidding on Straussart.co.za runs until the 16th of March with 80 lots from 35 producers on auction, including a fine mix of mature wines and highly sought-after collectables. It’s the kind of auction that allows for relaxed browsing and careful consideration, set to include a line-up of iconic wines from South Africa, Burgundy & Champagne, alongside a wealth of art. Paintings, works on paper and prints by top South African artists, such as Marlene Dumas, William Kentridge, Walter Battiss. Robert Hodgins, Claudette Schreuders, Simon Stone, and many others form part of the lots on offer. There is also a fine selection of silver, glassware, ceramics and furniture. Some interesting collector’s items will also be offered, including a collection of corkscrews and two car number plates. The sale concludes with the wine session.
“Burgundy wines have surged in demand world-wide recently, as collectors hone in on the most hallowed producers and vineyards,” says Roland Peens, Director of Wine Cellar fine wine merchants and Strauss & Co wine auction partner. “Mature bottles are ever more rare and the Strauss & Co online sale offers the most special Chardonnay in the world, Le Montrachet, as well as one of the most special Pinot Noir vineyards, Bonne-Mares. Burgundy is the home of Pinot and Chardonnay, a historical and very special region in east-central France. Many believe the elegant dry white and red wines from Burgundy are the pinnacle of wine.”
Just north of Burgundy is the region of Champagne which produces the most treasured sparkling wines in the world. Mature Grand Marque Champagnes are on offer, a sophisticated and complex wine that few can match. Incredible Champagnes back to the 1980s from the likes of Salon, Dom Perignon, Drappier and Laurent Perrier are on offer. Rare Burgundies back to the 1990s include fine bottles from George Roumier, Coche-Dury, Joseph Drouhin, Rene Engel and Comte de Vogue.South Africa has a rich heritage of producing quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and is considered among the finest outside of Burgundy. Produced in small pockets across the Cape, very little mature wine is available in the market however. Strauss & Co offers pristine stock from the top producers including Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Crystallum, Kershaw, Lismore, Meerlust, Newton Johnson, Paul Cluver, Storm Wines and Restless River.
The process of online bidding is simple. After registration on the website, bidding confirmations and updates are sent to the bidder via email and sms.
