An Auction of Cape Heritage Wines

The Strauss & Co Cape Heritage August online auction comprises of 94 lots inspired by South African history. With a famous lineage of unique expression in the Cape, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage have become somewhat of a South African calling card. Top producers are wonderfully diverse and the wines can offer remarkable ageability. Highlights include vintage Alheit Vineyards, Ken Forrester, Mullineux Family Wines, Raats, Beyerskloof and Kanonkop.

Seven vintages of Klein Constantia Vin de Constance back to the extremely-rare 1987 are also on auction.  Other classics such as Alto Rouge, Chateau Libertas and Zonnebloem add huge depth to this unique list.

With tremendous excitement we offer four bottles of extremely rare and never been sold Zonnebloem 1945 Cabernet Sauvignon from the private family collection of the original proprietors and makers of the early vintages of Zonnebloem. Roland Peens was fortunate enough to taste it in June. “The first 1945 Zonnebloem we have ever seen, and likely the only bottles in existence. Quite aromatic, red-fruited with good purity, especially for 77 years! A beautiful wine and experience, considering the rarity of this wine.”

23 lots are dedicated to Sadie Family Wines, South Africa’s leading fine wine producer. With focus on the Ouwingerdreeks or Old Vine Series, these incredible wines showcase pockets of old vines and unique terroirs, from Cinsaut, Chenin Blanc, Tinta Barocca, Semillon and Palomino. The Old Vine Series was first released in the 2009 vintage and we offer a rare original wooden case released with one each of the first six wines. Multiple vintages of Kokerboom, Mev Kirsten, Skerpioen, Skurfberg, T’Voetpad and Treinspoor are on offer.

The marquee lot is however, an incredible 8-case horizontal of the 2014 Ouwingerdreeks. With such world-wide demand for these small volume wines, this is Sadie Family fans’ delight!
