To mark Women’s Month in South Africa and in celebration of the strength and resilience of women and the ways in which they contribute to our society and country as a whole, we invite you to learn more about the achievements of four remarkable women whose roles are integral to Delaire Graff Estate.
Jacolien set foot on Delaire Graff Estate over 20 years ago and spent 15 years as Chief Financial Officer before being appointed Estate General Manager in 2022. Steadfast in her pursuit of perfection, Jacolien oversees every facet of the Estate, from hospitality to cuisine, wine, art, spa and most recently, the renovation of the Lodges, shared guest spaces and Indochine Restaurant – which will reopen during October 2023. Supporting an exemplary team with her knowledge and guidance, she ensures that Delaire Graff Estate continues to be recognised as one of the most renowned destinations in the world – the jewel in the crown of the Cape Winelands.
A typical day for Wanda begins at 07h00 with the preparation of a luxurious breakfast for the Estate’s Lodge guests. Afterwards, she attends a meeting between the kitchen and front-of-house teams who come together to align on their priorities for the day – and then the duties for lunch service begin. Wanda explained that she thrives on being surrounded by happy, motivated colleagues who share the utmost respect for one another while also being encouraged to grow and develop in their roles. She attributes her work ethic and career success to date to her sister, who has always supported her in achieving her dreams.
Magdalene has been part of the team at Delaire Graff Estate for over three years, ensuring the public and behind-the-scenes spaces on the Estate are looked after and maintained for both guests and employees. Her day begins with a meeting with colleagues, where they discuss their respective tasks. Magdalene says she draws inspiration from many of the women she works with on the Estate, who encourage her to do and be her very best – and believe in her. She loves working in such a beautiful environment surrounded by art and incredible views over the mountains and vineyards – and encourages others to stay true to themselves and to always be humble.
On a day-to-day basis, Candice works closely with Head Chef Clinton Jacobs to direct the preparation of every dish at Delaire Graff Restaurant, ensuring each plate looks and tastes exceptional. She is also responsible for checking over all of the fresh produce that comes into the kitchen – much of which is handpicked from the vegetable garden and greenhouse on the Estate each morning – ensuring it is of the perfect quality. Candice describes her colleagues at Delaire Graff Restaurant as her family, and she looks up to Ann-Sophie Pic – the most decorated Michelin-starred female chef in the world – and believes her discipline, finesse and dedication to her craft should be an example to all.
“A hidden paradise in Stellenbosch nestled between majestic mountains, I invite you to discover the many facets of Delaire Graff Estate that bring me so much joy each time I visit.” – Laurence Graff OBE
